Record participation at the International Judo Luftfahrt Masters Berlin 2022

The International Judo Luftfahrt Masters has been around for over 20 years, if you count the 2-year Corona break. If you look at the statistics, you can see that we are an indispensable part of the judo tournament calendar for judoka over 30. This year we registered 293 registered starts from 276 participants. A record compared to previous years.

This means that we are now the largest international judo veteran tournament in Germany. The fact that so many were able to take part was also due to the fact that dates such as DAN examination in Berlin, DEM over 30 and European and World Championships for veterans before November 26th. were discharged.

Among the numerous participants were well-known figures and title holders:

  • 5 x German Champions 2022 over 30:
    Michael Horn (+40, 90kg)
    Jens-Peter Bischof (+50, +100kg),
    Harald Fungk (+60, 73kg)
    Willy Huber (+60, 66kg)
    Manfred Zöllner (+60, 81kg
  • 2 x European Veteran Champion 2022:
    Manfred Zöllner (+60, 81kg)
    Martin Mairhofer (+40, 90kg)
  • 4 x World Veteran Champions 2022:
    Daniela Kortmann (+30, 63kg)
    Danielle Batt (+30, 70kg)
    Hendrik Koppe (+60, +100kg)

    Denys Stetsenko (+40, 90kg)

Over the years, more and more nations were added. There were new judoka from Armenia, Georgia, Japan and Tunisia, so that we came to 20 participating nations. The Poles traveled with the most foreign starters (24), followed closely by the Austrians with 21 judoka. In total, more than 30% international judoka were represented in the Merlitz sports hall. Almost every German judoka had an international encounter on the mat.
You can clearly see the occupations in the respective classes on the graphic.

It is admirable that there are many judoka over the age of 60 who still actively participate in the competition. The oldest participant at 70 years old was Werner Bauch (over 60, -81kg) from TV JAHN Wolfsburg e.V. Respect!!!

Also surprising was the highly occupied junior class u18, our judo veterans of tomorrow. 🙂 The open age group was probably the highest with over 90 judoka, although there were also athletes from the age groups 30+, 40+ and 50+ who fought there.

With the live stream we tried something new this year. However, our core competency is judo, so we couldn’t get the technique to work again after a technical failure, although there is still a little over 2 hours of recording material per mat. A big thank you to the team from the Judo Fanpage Nürnberg for providing the technology and the live stream (https://judo-fanpage.de ). We have added the videos to our Youtube channel and they are also linked below. Have fun watching.

There was also an innovation at the award ceremony, for the first time we had sponsors who supported us with the trophies. So we were able to award a trophy for the team placements 1 to 3. There was also a trophy for the first place in the individual ranking. That not only pleased us, but also the athletes.

So a big thank you to the sponsors:

Finally, of course, we would also like to thank all the helpers, members and their parents who, in addition to the mat, supported us in the preparations and implementation. As a result, the tournament could be carried out according to plan and without delay. This was also confirmed by the numerous compliments and congratulations that reached us after the competition via social networks, emails, messengers and personally.

A great cake from KaWi Cafe und Restaurant Karlshorst

We look forward to offering you another great tournament next year and hope for numerous participations in all age and weight classes. Stay healthy.
